Duplex 2205is a nitrogen enhanced duplex stainless steel that was developed to combat common corrosion problems encountered with the 300 series stainless steels. “Duplex” describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, like 304 stainless, nor purely ferritic, like 430 stainless. The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steelconsists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, 2205 contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. Often referred to as the work horse grade, 2205 is the most widely used grade in the duplex family of stainless steels.
The advantage of a duplex structure is that it combines the favorable qualities of a ferritic alloy (stress corrosion cracking resistance and high strength) with those of an austenitic alloy (ease of fabrication and corrosion resistance).
Usage of 2205 Duplex stainless steel should be limited to temperatures below 600° F. Extended elevated temperature exposure can embrittle 2205 stainless.

2205 duplex stainless steelis a cost effective solution for many applications where the 300 series stainless steels are susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Stress corrosion cracking occurs when stainless steels are subjected to tensile stress, while in contact with solutions containing chlorides. Increasing temperatures also increase the susceptibility of stainless steels to stress corrosion cracking.
The combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen convey the good resistance of 2205to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. This resistance is extremely important for services such as marine environments, brackish water, bleaching operations, closed loop water systems and some food processing applications. The high chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents of 2205 provide corrosion resistance superior to common stainless steels, such as, 316L and 317L in most environments and MD Exports LLP has been actively involved in ensuring the best quality of the same to our clients.

Welded Pipe Specifications
Usually it will be to ASTM A312. If it is to ASTM A358 then there are various Classes available as shown below. The Class Number dictates how the pipe is welded and what non-destructive tests:
| Class 1: | Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be completely radiographed. |
| Class 2: | Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes. No radiography is required. |
| Class 3: | Pipe shall be welded in one pass by processes employing filler metal and shall be completely radiographed |
| Class 4: | Same as Class 3 except that the welding process exposed to the inside pipe surface may be made without the addition of filler metal. |
| Class 5: | Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be spot radiographed. |
Pipe Specifications - Seamless/Welded
ASTM A312:Seamless and straight-seam welded austenitic pipe intended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Filler metal not permitted during welding.
ASTM A358:Electric fusion welded austenitic pipe for corrosive and/or high temperature service. Typically only pipe up to 8 inch is produced to this specification. Addition of filler metal is permitted during welding.
ASTM A790:Seamless and straight-seam welded ferritic/austenitic (duplex) pipe intended for general corrosive service, with a particular emphasis on resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
ASTM A409:Straight-seam or spiral-seam electric fusion welded large diameter austenitic light-wall pipe in sizes 14” to 30” with walls Sch5S and Sch 10S for corrosive and/or high temperature service.
ASTM A376:Seamless austenitic pipe for high temperature applications.
ASTM A813:Single-seam, single- or double- welded austenitic pipe for high temperature and general corrosive applications.
ASTM A814:Cold-worked welded austenitic pipe for high temperature and general corrosive service.
Note:Welded pipes manufactured to ASTM A312, A790 and A813 must be produced by an automatic process with NO addition of filler metal during the welding operation.
