300 Series Austenitic Stainless Steel

Sandmeyer Steel Company offers a wide range of austenitic stainless steel grades in the largest range of thicknesses and widths in North America.

Austenitic stainless steel plate comprises the most important class of the family of stainless steel plate because of its corrosion resistance, ease of fabrication, wide range of mechanical properties, and wide range of temperatures.

Austenitic stainless steel plate is non-magnetic. When nickel is added to stainless steel in sufficient amounts, the crystal structure changes to "austenite." The basic composition of 300 series austenitic stainless steels is 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This enhances their corrosion resistance and modifies the structure from ferritic to austenitic. Austenitic grades are the most commonly used stainless steels, accounting for more than 70% of production, and they are not hardenable by heat treatment.

300 Series Heat Resistant Stainless Steel Plate

Sandmeyer Steel Company stocks a complete range of heat resistant stainless steel plate from 304H, 309/309S, 310/310S, 321/321H, and 347/347H to meet your most demanding needs.

Heat resistant stainless steel plate grades are resistant to scaling and retain good strength at high temperatures. They also offer excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to high temperatures.

Superaustenitic Stainless Steel

Sandmeyer Steel Company maintains an extensive inventory of 904L and SSC-6MO stainless steel plate and plate products. SSC-6MO contains over 6% molybdenum and is the premier austenitic stainless steel for resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. It has significantly higher strength levels than conventional austenitic grades which enables it to be utilized in thinner sections.

Superaustenitic stainless steels have the same alloy structure as conventional 300 series austenitic grades. However, their enhanced levels of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper and nitrogen provide them with superior resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and uniform corrosion. The high nitrogen content in some superaustenitic stainless steels provides higher mechanical properties than the conventional 300 series stainless grades enabling them to be designed in thinner cross sections. Superaustenitics are utilized where the corrosion resistance of 316L, 317L and duplex stainless steels are not adequate or as a cost-effective substitute for some nickel alloys.

Duplex/Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Sandmeyer Steel Company has an extensive inventory of Duplex LDX 2101®, 2304, 2205 and 2507 stainless steel plate and plate products available to satisfy your challenging corrosion and high strength requirements.

Duplex stainless steel plate contains relatively high levels of chromium (between 18% and 28%) and low to moderate amounts of nickel (between 1.5% and 8%). The high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties of duplex stainless steels can be attributed to their chemical composition and balanced (duplex) microstructure of approximately equal volume percentages of ferrite and austenite.

LDX 2101® is a low nickel, nitrogen-enhanced lean duplex stainless steel with corrosion resistance similar to 304 but with much higher mechanical strength. This enables it to be used in thinner cross-sections which provide cost savings to the end user. Alloys 2304 and 2205 are the most common grades. They both exhibit outstanding resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking.

“Super” duplex grades have enhanced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance when compared with 300-series austenitic stainless steels or conventional duplex alloys. This can be attributed to the enhanced levels of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen found in these materials. Alloy 2507 is the most common “super” duplex grade.

Precipitation Hardening

Sandmeyer Steel Company stocks a complete line of 17-4PH stainless steel plate for applications in offshore, food, pulp and paper, aerospace, and mechanical components and nuclear waste casks.

Precipitation hardening stainless steel plate, like the martensitic types, can be strengthened (i.e., hardened) by heat treatment. The mechanism is metallurgically different from the process in the martensitic types. This means that either martensitic or austenitic precipitation hardening structures can be produced. These stainless steels combine high strength and hardness with corrosion resistance which is superior to that of the martensitic chromium stainless steels. All precipitation hardening stainless steel plate contains a relatively high chromium content. Most applications of precipitation hardening stainless steel plate are for corrosion resistance or oxidation resistance and retention of strength at elevated temperatures.

Martensitic Stainless Steel

Sandmeyer Steel Company stocks a full range of Alloy 410, which is a basic, general-purpose, magnetic, and hardenable grade by quenching and tempering.

Martensitic stainless steel plate has a relatively high carbon content (0.1% - 1.2%) compared to other stainless steels. The martensitic stainless steels are plain chromium steels containing between 12% and 18% chromium. These stainless steels can be heat treated to obtain high strength with good ductility. Martensitic stainless steel plate has very high hardenability. When only limited corrosion resistance or resistance to moderately elevated temperature scaling is required, martensitic stainless steel plate can be used in the annealed condition, but its highest corrosion resistance is attained in the hardened and stress relieved (low temperature tempered) condition.

Ferritic Stainless Steel

Sandmeyer Steel Company maintains an extensive inventory of 410S stainless steel plate and plate products to satisfy your requirements for an alloy that exhibits adequate corrosion resistance, good oxidation resistance and does not harden or crack when exposed to welding or high temperatures.

Ferritic stainless steels are straight-chromium 400 series grades that cannot be hardened by heat treatment and only moderately hardened by cold working. They usually have a chromium content of between 10 to 20% and lower carbon contents than the martensitic stainless steels. Ferritic stainless steels are magnetic, have good ductility and resistance to corrosion and oxidation. They are inherently stronger than carbon steel and are utilized in applications where thinner materials and reduced weight are advantageous. They are often specified due to their superior corrosion resistance and resistance to scaling at elevated temperatures.
